Pumice Peter Pan Trench

After countless hours of grueling and lots of learning I have completed my first trench coat! I have always loved a classic trench, and plan to make many more, I already have collar, carrier, and sleeve variations in mind!!

I wanted to keep this one very classic, sweet and conservative looking! I feel the minimal topstitching, color (light pumice gray), and collar really lend to that. I usually don't like long coats and jackets, but this time I went with knee length since it is missing in my wardrobe and I plan on wearing it with dresses.

This time I went unlined because I believe it will be good for spring, and the fabric I used is very thick and warm on its own. I found a light grey drill material (cotton and polyester blend) in the textiles area of dowtown Arequipa. This fabric ended up being a terrible choice and caused a ton of hassle, it also is pretty unforgiving and requires intense pressing.

I thought omitting the lining would turn out to make this project faster, but binding all of the seams ended up being more time consuming than I thought. The fabric I used for the bindings is a cotton plaid, but it frays profusely. I am beginning to think I need a lesson in textiles to make my projects more successful!! I also left off the waist carriers (belt loops) because the were looking a little messy for the style I was going for, and I want the freedom of wearing any kind of belt with this coat, the next one I will include them so that I can wear the belt tied to the back (I love that casual style, but it looks better with drapy jackets.)

I used the Vogue 2449 pattern and was true to it for the most part, my recommended size was 12 (according to the size chart) but I did a 10 and it feels quite oversized on me. Next time I'll try the 8 (and maybe even do a muslin version first!) I stayed pretty true to the pattern but made the collar into a peter pan one, and rounded a lot of the details for a softer look.

I ended up having to hand sew on all the buttons and manually made the buttonholes (which was a major learning point) by manipulating stitch width and length on my machine.

I love all of the details on this coat, the belts, shields, epaulets, vent etc! Oh, and not to mention my hard to find buttons (all 20 of them)!!
